The following principles are the foundation of Islamic business. These are the core values that guide the way we do business. Please keep in mind that these principles can be applied to any business or organization.
Conduct business with honesty and trustworthiness as these are the fundamental principles of Islamic business practices. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, 'The signs of a hypocrite are three: whenever he speaks, he lies; whenever he makes a promise, he breaks it; and whenever he is entrusted with something, he betrays that trust.' (Sahih Bukhari)
Conduct business with fairness and justice to all parties involved. Allah (swt) says in the Qur'an, 'O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah (swt), even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah (swt) is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah (swt) is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.' (Qur'an 4:135)
Conduct business that is beneficial to all parties involved. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, 'The believer does not cheat, lie, or deceive others.' (Sunan Abu Dawud)
Conduct business in a way that avoids interest (riba), as it is prohibited in Islam. Allah (swt) says in the Qur'an, 'O you who have believed, fear Allah (swt) and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers. And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah (swt) and His Messenger.' (Qur'an 2:278-279)
Conduct business in a way that avoids exploiting others, especially the weak and vulnerable. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, 'Allah (swt) is most pleased with His servant who does not burden others.' (Sahih Bukhari)
Conduct business in a way that avoids deception and misrepresentation. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, 'He who deceives us is not one of us.' (Sahih Muslim)
Conduct business with the intention of seeking the blessings of Allah (swt). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, 'The truthful, trustworthy merchant is with the prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs.' (Sunan Ibn Majah)
Conduct business in a way that fulfills all contracts and agreements made. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, 'The signs of a hypocrite are three: whenever he speaks, he lies; whenever he makes a promise, he breaks it; and whenever he is entrusted with something, he betrays that trust.' (Sahih Bukhari)
Conduct business in a way that avoids corruption, greed and excessive accumulation of wealth. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, 'The upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand is the one that gives and the lower hand is the one that receives.' (Sahih Bukhari)
